PJF Jan 13, 2010(Passing the Torch)

I just returned from four days (Jan 13-16, 2010) in Panama where the 7th Annual Panama Jazz Festival(PJF)was in full swing.

For the past 7 years pianist Danilo Perez has invited some of the world's best Jazz artists to perform, and mentor young musicians who compete for scholarships at the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

This practice, of course, has long been in evidence around the country and the world. Here in North Carolina at NC Central University, Duke University, and UNC Chapel Hill the, "passing of the torch", to

another generation is also ensuring that Jazz evolves. Local concerts often feature, middle, highschool, and college jazz bands before the pros come on stage.

On this Wednesday night, Jan 13th, Joe Lavano(ts), Danilo Perez(p), John Pattitucci(b), Terry Lynn Carrington(dr) and Jamey Haddad(pr)turned up the heat on already 92 degree temps, jamming into the night at the Teatro Nacional.

Mid-way into their final piece, each musician, one by one, was replaced by a scholarship student playing the same instrument. Each student was lead on stage by a small child. The small children were students at the Danilo Perez Foundation. An image I will not forget.
