Panamanian Jazz Piano Icon Oswald Ellerton, better known as Sonny White, was honored at the 7th Annual Panama Jazz Festival(PJF) in Jan 2010.
Born in Panama in 1917, White was in the US by the 30's playing with cats like
Sidney Bechet, Teddy Hill and others. He also can be heard on Billie Holiday's 1939 recording of Strange Fruit.
The honor to White was given at the PJF opening night gala(Jan 13, 2010), at which the Berklee College of Music also announced the creation of the Global Jazz Institute, naming Danilo Perez as its' artistic director.
Through his foundation and the PJF, Danilo Perez is an excellent choice to lead this new institute. He is one of the young lions of Jazz, and has with an international following.
